I believe that ALL children deserve an opportunity to experience success as a learner and to receive an education that enables them to realize their potential. At an individual level, education provides the foundation necessary to become a healthy, productive member of society. At a societal level, education is the only possible cure for our most significant problems: poverty, hunger, intolerance. ALL of our children need a path to success, and as adults, it is our responsibility to help them find it. Why ASMS? Our students enter as children and leave as young adults. What could be more exciting than watching and participating in the tremendous growth and maturation of our children as learners and community members? Our students, faculty members, and parents teach me something every day, they make me laugh, and they bring me great joy. No other professional experience could be better than that!.

The middle school years are a critical and influential point in time for a young person. I was set on my path to engineering by a middle school science teacher, so I personally have benefited from educators who truly care and have a passion for the development and success of young people. That passion is contagious and students can't help but get engaged. Beyond the academics, I love that the mission of ASMS sets the stage for the development of foundational soft skills like tolerance, respect, and kindness that will serve young people well in the rest of their academic, professional, and personal lives.

"There is never a time when I pull my chair alongside a child and a miracle doesn't appear." - Dr. Denny Taylor.
Our students enter ASMS as children and leave as young adults. In the short three years they spend with us, we get to see miracles appear. The "a-ha" moment when a student understands a new concept, the celebration as the ball falls through the hoop, the pride on their faces after a concert, the genuine care and kindness they show for their peers, I became a teacher because I get to be a witness to these miracles.

The middle school years are an exciting time of change in an individual's life. While from an outsider's perspective it may seem to be a time of struggle and conflict, it is also a time where an individual may begin to develop into an analytical thinker who is a respectful, responsible, and independent learner. I am in education to help students, families, and educators create an environment that is conducive to academic, ethical, and moral development. By offering support and guidance, I hope to help each student identify and develop their strengths and find their own paths to success.

One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like, but the world may be a better place because I was important in the life of a child.

If I can make a difference in the life of one child, then I have succeeded.

It gives me such joy to watch the enthusiasm and energy students put into everything they do. Their intensity for learning about the world around them is amazing to see. It is a privilege to be witness to the process and share in the growth.

Librarian
I love learning about everything and anything and reading in all its forms. When I returned to education, I decided to move to the library because that’s where all of my favorite parts of education were housed. As Patrick Ness says, “Librarians are the tour guides of all knowledge,” and there is nothing more exciting than helping a student find a book that they love or learn about something they didn’t know before.

Science and technology will be at the core of our childrens’ future success, and so giving them every opportunity to learn as much as they can in these areas as middle school students will help them form a solid foundation that will support them through high school, college, and beyond. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to help kids build that foundation.
