The Alternative School for Math & Science

Celebrating 20 years of innovative teaching and student-centered learning

ASMS has provided exceptional education for middle school students in the Southern Tier region for 20 years. Established in 2003, our school’s unique, research-based learning approach is focused on developing the whole child in an academically supportive and challenging environment.

Since opening our doors to 20 students in January 2004, ASMS has served a diverse community of 862 students from 19 school districts and a range of learning profiles and backgrounds. Today, the school has grown significantly to serve ~140 middle school students each year.

ASMS kicked off our 20th anniversary celebration with the unveiling of a special, commemorative art installation featuring alumni. Inspired by the national Inside Out Project, more than 50 alumni portraits are featured side-by-side as ASMS students and today, highlighting the different experiences of the ASMS community and the transformative nature of the middle school experience.
